JOHN PORTMAN & ASSOCIATES AWARDED THE GURI NEW TOWN MASTER PLAN IN GURI, SOUTH KOREA
ATLANTA, GA (July 2008) John Portman & Associates, Inc. (PORTMAN) is pleased to announce their partnership with the City of Guri to develop a Master Planning Concept
for Guri New Town, a two million square meter region that will undergo redevelopment.
Guri, once a suburb of Seoul, South Korea, is now its own city, and the smallest in the province. Since growth is limited by its proximity to the mountains, the Han
River and Seoul, PORTMAN is tasked with offering the area known as Guri New Town, a section of this compact city, with an environmentally responsive plan focusing on
green space and creating an community with options to reduce automobile traffic. Sustainable design practices will be incorporated throughout the process.
Early concepts include plans for high-density residential neighborhoods that each border a green space. Great emphasis will be placed on ensuring that these neighborhoods
have access to park areas strategically placed throughout the site. These open green spaces will also integrate water features, creating natural places for residents to
enjoy in the midst of the dense city structure.
Key features of Guri New Town include a central landmark mixed-use tower, a sub-grade retail structure that takes advantage of natural light and offers a space above for a
public park, pedestrian-friendly expanses that encourage the use of bicycles and public transportation as opposed to personal automobiles, and a locally operated people-moving
transportation system. Provisions have also been made to extend subway lines to service Guri New Town.
Realization of the Guri New Town master plan is projected for the year 2020.
