MACON STATE COLLEGE CELEBRATES DEDICATION OF NEW SCIENCE BUILDING
Science building designed by John Portman & Associates is now open to Macons 5,000 students
ATLANTA, GA - April 8, 2004 - John Portman & Associates, Inc. (Portman) is pleased to announce the completion and dedication of the Charles H. Jones Science Building at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia. The building contains state-of-the-art facilities for nursing and respiratory health, and science laboratories for physics, anatomy/physiology, biology, microbiology, chemistry and organic chemistry. The three-story, 84,200-square foot structure is the largest building on the Macon campus, and is a cornerstone for the new academic complex being developed around the colleges lake.
Located on the western edge of the Macon State campus off Ivey Drive, this dramatically linear building creates a new image for the rapidly growing Macon State College campus and reinforces the campus master plan and new linear pedestrian walkway. The barrel-vaulted roof of the building is interrupted along its length by a flat-planed skylight, emphasizing the main entrance and lobby that separate the building into two wings.
The new science building is named in honor of Macon developer and community leader Charles H. Jones. Macon States president David A. Bell requested the dedication to recognize Jones for his service to the region and contributions to higher education. Charlie Jones has been a longtime advocate for Macon State and its development as a baccalaureate institution. As a member of the Board of Regents he was passionate about improving access to higher education throughout Georgia and he played a very positive role in restructuring facilities and fiscal management in the University System, Bell said.
