TOMORROW SQUARE SELECTED FOR EMPORIS SKYSCRAPER AWARD
Portman Building Ranked in Top 10 for 2003
ATLANTA, GA July 9, 2004 - John Portman & Associates, Inc. (Portman) is honored to announce that the Tomorrow Square building located in Shanghai, China ranked in the Top 10 for the Emporis Skyscraper Award 2003. This Portman-designed project placed 6th out of 426 buildings nominated for the award, which identifies the "Best New Skyscraper of the Year for Design and Functionality". This recognition is presented annually, and the winning buildings are determined by a jury of Emporis Senior Editors.
Portmans goal in designing Tomorrow Square was to represent the future, not the past. Incorporating a comprehensive program of hotel, residential, and retail functions, Tomorrow Square creates a dramatic landmark on Shanghais skyline.
Tomorrow Square is comprised of three major elements on a landscaped plaza. The 60-story tower features a 340-room J.W. Marriott hotel, with 36 floors of Marriott executive apartments on the lower floors, and a sky-lit podium base. The aluminum and glass faade of the buildings basic square plan reaches upward in a straightforward, geometric progression, reflecting the change of function within via a 45-degree rotation at the towers 37th level. The granite podium extends the width of the site arcing around the tower to maximize the importance of the Nanjing Road entrance. This six-level, 200,000-square foot (18,600 sm) structure provides retail, restaurants, entertainment, a conference center, health club, and subway access for the guests and residents of Shanghai.
